KITTERY, Maine – Public comment turned confrontational at Monday’s Town Council meeting.
Kittery resident Vern Gardner spoke to council Chairman Gary Beers and accused him of improperly silencing his testimony at the Wednesday, Feb. 22 Town Council meeting. Gardner was kicked out of the previous meeting for accusing Councilor Charles Denault of fabricating The Fabulous Find’s complaint against Planning Board Chairwoman Ann Grinnell in his report submitted to the Town Council.
Beers ruled that Gardner was out of order on Feb. 22 because he disparaged Denault by accusing him of lying. Beers said as chairman he had the authority to maintain decorum and order in Town Council meetings.
The board of directors at The Fabulous Find has maintained the contents of the complaint are accurate in Denault’s report.
“It is immaterial whether or not one of our board members asked Ann Grinnell for her opinion of the Wood Island Life Saving Station Association (WILSSA),” said The Fabulous Find’s President Marcye Philbrook in an email. “It was inappropriate for Ms. Grinnell, as a member of Kittery’s Wood Island Advisory Committee and Kittery Planning Board, to object to and try to dissuade The Fabulous Find via adamant statements in the store, a hand written note and an e-mail, from giving to WILSSA.”
