bridge-closed1PORTSMOUTH — Drivers can expect lane closures on the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge in early November as a six-month structural inspection continues. The lift span connects the city with Kittery, Maine, along the Route 1 Bypass over the Piscataqua River.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation said the inspection will run Monday, Nov. 2 through Friday, Nov. 6, as well as Monday, Nov. 9 if needed. Lanes will be closed as needed and as weather permits between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on these dates.

Flag persons, electronic message signs, and warning signs will be used to notify drivers of the lane closure, the DOT said. Motorists traveling between Portsmouth and Kittery are asked to use alternate routes if possible to avoid delays.

In the event of adverse weather, the inspection work may be delayed until the next suitable workday.
