Signer of the Declaration of Independence honored in Kittery
KITTERY — A signer of the Declaration of Independence is being remembered with a granite memorial stone and bronze plaque.
William Whipple, a native of Kittery, is being honored at the Circle of Honor of Kittery’s Memorial Park, near Town Hall.
Whipple was a merchant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During the Revolutionary War, he was brigadier general of the New Hampshire Militia and one of the negotiators of the surrender of British Gen. John Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga.
Whipple was one of three men from New Hampshire who signed the declaration — the others were Josiah Bartlett and Matthew Thornton.
