After hearing from concerned citizens who expressed the frustrations of the new sidewalks to NOWHERE in Kittery Point, (déjà vu) I went to the old Frisbee Store (Bistro 1828) to see for myself. I met with a couple of local Kittery Point resident. I also met with a potential new resident in the near future. A few others stopped and appeared to be taking pictures of the mess.
I was perplexed once again how this intersection came to be. If you have not noticed, there are new curbs blocking the entrance near the old gas pumps of the old Frisbee Store. New sidewalks have been built that connect the nowhere sidewalk at the parking lot at Pepperrell Cove Restaurant and the Bistro 1828. Yes! there are entrances into the parking lot but one of the curbs looks like a bicycle jump. See the pictures.
While I was there, a truck drove over the curbs edge and once again, I see the AROMA JOE’S FIASCO coming to life again in Kittery Point. I saw a car try to turn around and pull into the parking lot across the street and while turning left tire tracks near the edge of the not yet constructed curb.
Across the street on the Pepperrell Terrace side, I saw sidewalks and entrances as well as TWO parallel exits. These two exits could eventually lead two vehicles to turn into each other and perhaps into the third one from the opposite side.
A saw a new fence and arborvitaes that were added and one resident told me, “wait till the plowing season comes and how long will that fence last? Who paid for this fence and did the Town make these people pay for it?” I was asked.
The sidewalks that one resident told me they believed was forced onto the new entrepreneurs of the property, really goes nowhere. It makes no sense. Sidewalks block the area where the old gas pumps once sat. A sidewalk lines the opposite side of the street so why on the Bistro 1828 side?
One resident told me that you can pull up to the Post Office and get your mail and then you need to negotiate turns into and out of a parking lot blocked by curbs if you want to turn around. “Where was the logic behind that” the citizen said. The resident added, where will they turn when the parking lot is full?
There was a feeling the new owners won’t complain since they had to agree to all these extra demands to get the business going. A few asked and questioned if they have to pay for this? It is not their property and they don’t want to upset the planning board”. he quipped. “isn’t this Town property, did the planning board design this and why are we doing this to these people?”
Sadly I don’t know enough of what is going on here, but I hope others are paying attention to this situation. Another resident said there parking on the grass next to the tomb and she was upset that the Town knows it.
Here are pictures I took today to illustrate the area. I will raise it during Council Concerns and see what is going on.
“The Town should stop this and revisit it before its too late” a resident added and “we are are supposed to be business friendly”?
Look at this picture from another Kittery Point Resident.
Let me know your thoughts. Should this be reviewed? As always, ourkittery is keeping you informed.
UPDATED! Many ideas have been floated, like brick stamped pavements painted for the trolley or Shuttles to park at. They exist out in front of TB Banknorth. Planters or other low profile structures. One can’t even drop of their seniors and then go park without being in the road. I asked the following questions as given to me by many residents. Here is what I asked to have answered. Town Manager Amaral can help us with the answers.
I brought it up during Council Comments and Issues. I have since heard more, like they were required to have a shuttle or trolley and the parking spot was in front of the Bistro. Now they had to put in a curb and the parking of the shuttle or trolley or even the delivery trucks are now in the road and they are allowed by law to do this. How is the traffic affected now. I will be reviewing the tapes of the meetings and as soon as I have them, I will post them. Here are the questions I asked. I am sure there are more but I could not right them down quick enough. Anyone concerned about this situation should contact the Town manager 207-475-1329 or Kamaral@kitteryme.org or the rest of the council.
