KITTERY, Maine – For the first time, onlookers at the Memorial Day service at Orchard Grove Cemetery were handed full-sized American flags to hold during the ceremonies.

Vietnam veteran Paul LeBlanc was responsible for bringing the flags as part of Flags Across America, similar to Wreaths Across America, in which LeBlanc also participates.

He gave a brief description of how the flags should be held before the ceremony began.

“This is blowing me away,” LeBlanc said as he saw the sea of flags lining the graveyard. “This is so cool.”

Before the gathering in the cemetery, a parade marched through the center of town that included the Shapleigh Middle School band, crew of the submarine USS Annapolis (SSN 760), and the Kittery Fire Department.
