Hackers target Kittery School District

hacker-1KITTERY, Maine — A hacker attempted to obtain school district employees’ personal information last week by trying to impersonate the district’s superintendent.

Superintendent Allyn Hutton said an email was sent on March 23 to the district’s business manager and human resources director requesting employee W-2s. The email appeared to come from Hutton herself and it requested the information be prepared in a PDF file and sent to Hutton immediately.

No information was provided to the hacker, Hutton said. Both the business manager and the human resources director contacted Hutton to inquiry why the information was needed. The district had heard of a similar scam happening in other parts of the country about three weeks ago. The business manager was also aware of a similar scam and emailed Hutton to ask her if she had sent the email. It also helped that the district office is small and the request seemed out of place.
