KITTERY, Maine — It was about 6:15 a.m. last Saturday when Joshua Philbrick’s ice fishing flag went up — the first flag of the day.

Philbrick wasn’t even on the ice at the time; he was throwing wood across the open water at the edge of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire at the annual Great Rotary Fishing Derby sponsored by the Meredith Rotary Club.
