Eliot talks options for replacing police chief

ELIOT, Maine — The Board of Selectmen Thursday discussed possible avenues to explore when Police Chief Theodor Short retires next June.

In a unique situation, Short has been chief in both Eliot and Kittery for two and half years, to cut costs in both towns.

Last week, Town Manager Dana Lee said, “Ted was unique. Someone coming in from the outside wouldn’t be able to do the same job he did.” He said the two police departments call for different demands, but Short’s knowledge of the two departments made the joint position possible.

Thursday, Lee read his memo about a meeting he had with Short and Kittery Town Manager Nancy Colbert Puff. He said he and Puff both do not intend to pursue a shared chief again. He said Short’s familiarity with both departments and his background and tenure with Eliot could not be readily replicated.
