NH_Portsmouth_Herald KITTERY, Maine — Approaching Wood Island Life Saving Station, about a mile off the coast of Pepperrell Cove, preservation architect Deane Rykerson peered at the 100-year-old structure, standing stout above the surrounding surf.
“It looks a lot nicer from here,” Rykerson said aboard a small fishing boat.
Rykerson, who also serves as a state representative from Kittery, was joined on the excursion by Sam Reid, president of the Wood Island Life Saving Station Association. The association has secured more than $600,000 to refurbish and clean the exterior of the former military station, one of 12 remaining in existence. Also on the site walk were several restoration, abatement and barge company representatives, touring the structure before submitting their qualifications to WILSSA and Kittery for the project.
